Human-AI Learning Contract
I. Our Shared Vision
The goal of this contract is to reclaim student agency in an era of rapid technological change. We agree that education should empower individuals to navigate complex futures and that AI must be integrated in a way that amplifies human capabilities, fosters critical thinking, and promotes equity.
II. Core Principles
We commit to these six guiding principles for all AI-enabled learning:
- Prioritize Human Agency: AI must support human intellect and creativity, never replace the need for critical thinking or ethical reasoning.
- Uphold Ethical Standards: We commit to fairness, accountability, and transparency in all AI processes and outputs.
- Ensure Equitable Access: We will work to bridge the digital divide, ensuring all students have the tools and literacy needed to succeed, regardless of background.
- Foster Critical AI Literacy: Learning how AI works and its limitations is as important as learning how to use it.
- Champion Collaborative Oversight: Policies and practices will be co-designed by students, teachers, and administrators.
- Commit to Continuous Adaptation: We recognize AI is evolving rapidly and will regularly review and adjust our practices based on new evidence and ethical challenges.
III. Student Commitments
As a student and an emerging "Editor," I commit to:
- Critical Engagement: I will use AI as a navigator, not a ghostwriter. I will verify, question, and evaluate all AI outputs for accuracy and bias.
- Transparency and Integrity: I will clearly cite any AI assistance in my work and follow institutional guidelines for acceptable use.
- Developing Foundational Skills: I recognize that I must master "Maker" skills (writing, logic, math) to be a competent "Editor" of AI outputs.
- Data Mindfulness: I will be aware of my data privacy rights and use AI tools responsibly.
IV. Educator Commitments
As an educator and an "Architect of Learning," I commit to:
- Fostering Autonomy: I will design assessments that focus on the learning process and higher-order thinking rather than outputs that can be easily automated.
- Clear Guidance: I will provide explicit, course-specific boundaries for AI use and model ethical, responsible implementation.
- Equitable Support: I will advocate for resources to ensure no student is left behind due to a lack of access to technology or literacy training.
- Human-Centric Mentorship: I will use AI to handle routine tasks so I can focus more deeply on meaningful human interaction and coaching.
V. The Boundary Line: Tool vs. Crutch
We agree to distinguish between ethical augmentation and AI abuse:
- Ethical Use: Using AI to summarize research, brainstorm structures, or act as a Socratic tutor that leads to an answer.
- AI Abuse: "Blind-copying" AI content without verification, bypassing the cognitive struggle necessary for learning, or passing off machine work as original human effort.
